The months of June to August are the months that makes up the rainy season. Rainy season brings lot of fun, the weather is cool, the environment is all green. But on the other hand, it also invites a lot of health disorders and illnesses. The truth is dealing with this season can prove to be difficult, especially for children who are usually vulnerable.

Parents of these children need to be extra careful during rainy season. Those that have one allergy or the other are not left out, because of the climate condition and environmental factors, people that are allergic are usually prone to falling ill in this season.

There are also a host of infections that are prevalent during the rainy season. It is very important that people should be aware of these problems so that they can take necessary precaution during this season. The most common illness which is related to respiratory system is water and food borne diseases and they cannot be overlooked. Cold and flu are common illness that are noticeable during rainy season and this is usually due to fluctuation in the temperature. If you are a student, a working citizen or a mom, you need to protect yourself from these illnesses and prevent from getting sick.

Common Illness caused During Rainy Season

Dengue

This is a mosquito borne tropical disease transmitted by the specie of mosquito called the aedes caused by the dengue virus. Symptoms include high fever, headache, vomiting, muscle and joint pains. It could be haemorrhagic fever resulting in bleeding, low levels of blood platelets.

It is the leading causes of illness and death in the tropical and sub-tropical regions affecting one third of the world’s population living in the area. When infected, early recognition and prompt supportive treatment can substantially lower the risk of medical complications and death.

Flu

Short for influenza, it is a common viral infection that is spread by cough and sneeze. It is an all year round infection but more rampant in the cold season. It should not be confused with common cold, unlike common cold the symptoms tend to start more suddenly, can be severe and last longer.

Food infection

Also referred to as food poisoning. Because of the wide spread of viruses and bacteria caused during the raining season, it is common to find people suffering from this, this is because people patronize food that are not home cooked.

Food poisoning is an illness caused by eating contaminated food or water, it can get contaminated during its stage of production, processing or cooking. In most cases of food poisoning, it is caused by bacteria such as E.coli, parasites and viruses; however, 99.9% of food borne illness is caused by unknown sources.

For a country as ours, hygiene plays a major role in the spread of food poisoning, most people don’t bother to wash their hands with soap after visiting the toilets or even after returning from the market, school or church, they just delve into their food thereby contaminating the food that they are about to eat. Living in a place that breeds insects such as, cockroaches, houseflies or rodents like rats that can readily carry germs to our food still boils to the hygiene.

When these symptoms kick in, it is advised that such a person should rest and drink lots of water to prevent hydration, because at this stage such a person would have been vomiting or stooling.  Oral Rehydration Solution (ORS) is a solution can be administered to any person that has suffered food poisoning to help alleviate the loss of fluid in the body.

Leptospirosos

This is another illness that occurs during the rainy season. It is caused by bacteria that can be carried either by a man or some animal. Its severe form can damage kidney, lever, meningitis and respiratory failure.

    1. Dear kelvin, thank you for your question. The drugs that would be prescribed who depend on the illness that the victim is suffering from. However, I advise that you see a doctor for a proper diagnosis so as to know the appropriate medication to use if you ever get sick.
