Ladi Kwali: What You Don’t Know About The Woman On The N20 Note

The Twenty Naira note is as old as Nigeria Itself. Its beauty its not just in its design but about the personality on it. Most Nigerians are not aware of the fact that the personality adorning the Twenty Naira note is part of our history.


Her name is Ladi Kwali, Nigeria’s Famous female potter. She was born in 1925 in Kwali, a village in the Gwari region of Northern Nigeria.

She took pottery with with keen interest and her pots were internationally recognized for their uniqueness, their beauty and the way she decorated them.

Ladi Kwali’s works so caught the eye that in the late 50’s and 60’s, her works were exhibited in Britain. Till date, she is known as Nigeria’s best potter. Her work earned her a doctorate and she was made a member of the order of the British Empire (M.B.E) in 1963

She died in 1984, aged 59 and her picture gracefully adorns our twenty Naira note.
