On registering your business name with the CAC, no other company or individual can register or use the same name to transact business in Nigeria.

GUIDELINES ON HOW TO REGISTER A BUSINESS NAME IN NIGERIA
1. Choose A Business Name
You should have chosen a business name. This is not something you choose randomly as it requires great thought on a great name that will sell.
2. Pay A Visit To The Corporate Affairs Commission, CAC
On deciding on a business name, the next step to take to register your business is to visit the Corporate Affairs Commission, CAC in order to determine if the name you have chosen is available. You will be given a business name search form to fill. Fill in the form appropriately and submit it. You will be required to pay a sum for the business name search form. All details entered into the form will be required in block/capital letters except you are instructed to do otherwise. Once you have filled in the form and submitted it, you’ll be required to go back and check again after a week when your request must have been processed.
3. Visit the Corporate Affairs Commission Again
After a week Visit Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) again; Once you checked and your choice name is not available then you will have to repeat step 1- 3, Hence if your business name is available; Proceed to registration, you will be given another form called Registration of Business Name (Form001), fill it correctly and if there is part you don’t understand don’t feel shy to ask people around, after filling the form then proceed to payment of the registration fee which cost N10, 000 only. Once you’ve made the payment of the registration fee, collect affidavit form, fill it and proceed to any magistrate court around you for attestation by the court magistrate. This shouldn’t be more than N1000, after this take the form back to the CAC for submission.
4. Congratulations Your Business Has Been Registered
Now that your business has been registered, you only have to wait a little for the collection of your business name certificate. This should take up to 7 -10 working days for your Certificate to be ready for pick. If your company is a Limited Company, your certificate will be sent to you once it is ready.
